According to a study, elderly people whose eyesight is failing can improve their balance and avoid dangerous falls by practicing tai chi.

The gentle form of martial art builds strength besides improving balance control to reduce the chances of life-threatening falls among old people with poor eyesight.

Study author Dr William Tsang said: ‘Tai chi can be a suitable form of exercise for those with visual impairment and indeed assists with improving their balance control.’

The belief that pay hikes and bonuses have became extinct after recession is not true any more.

After employees of American Electric Power and its subsidiaries, including Appalachian Power, were made eligible for pay increases and bonuses, it was the turn of Verizon Wireless‘ 100-plus West Virginia employees.

Bonuses ranged from 8 to 10 percent of the employee’s salary and are based on Verizon Wireless’ overall performance in 2010, said company spokeswoman Laura Merritt.

In addition to a bonus, employees will be receiving merit increases on March 20.

Merritt said that like the bonuses, merit increases are based on performance. Also coming next month: A profit-sharing payout. “Eligible employees will receive a contribution of 2.5 percent of their salary,” she said.

“In light of what we’ve seen the last couple of years with the economy, employees really appreciate working for a company that’s solid financially and appreciates its employees,” Merritt said.

Merritt said Verizon Wireless also has an attractive benefits package that includes a 401 (k) plan with a 6-percent match; tuition assistance of up to $8,000 a year; and an adoption benefit of up to $10,000 per adoption.
