Big Businesses Accused By UN Leader Of Health Cover-Up

UN leader Ban Ki-moon while launching a summit on everyday diseases killing tens of millions each year accused big business of putting public health at risk “to protect their own profits.”

“There is a well-documented and shameful history of certain players in industry who ignored the science — sometimes even their own research — and put public health at risk to protect their own profits,” Ban Ki-moon said.

From news.yahoo.com:

Ban said most industry giants have “acted responsibly” but added: “That is all the more reason we must hold everyone accountable — so that the disgraceful actions of a few do not sully the reputation of the many which are doing such important work to foster our progress.”

Ban called upon corporations that profit from selling processed foods to children “to act with the utmost integrity.”

“I refer not only to food manufacturers, but also the media, marketing and advertising companies that play central roles in these enterprises,” he told the summit.

“Those who profit from alcohol sales have to do their part to promote moderation in alcohol consumption. And we can all work to end tobacco use.”

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe called on rich countries to help poor nations to “ensure access to medicines, appropriate technology transfer and further training for our health personnel” to counter the diseases.

Apple to Switch On The Living Room TV

Apple to Switch On The Living Room TV

Apple is planning to dominate the living room with yet another slickly-designed user-friendly device, Apple TV, after taking the smartphone and tablet markets by storm.

Apple intends on revolutionizing the TV market in 2012, according to multiple reports.

From in.finance.yahoo.com:

VentureBeat suggested that Apple’s vision could “tie seamlessly into other Apple devices, like the iPhone, iPad and MacBook Air, giving the company an enviable full-circle consumer product line,” and added that the Apple TV might function similarly to the smart devices seen in a promotional video published by Gorilla Glass maker Corning.

Apple has long been rumored to be working on a smart TV. In June 2011 a former Apple executive who spoke to technology blog DailyTech on the condition of anonymity revealed that Apple had teamed up with a “major OEM to sell iOS-powered, Apple branded displays.”

Despite the continued rumors, many tech pundits remain doubtful about Apple’s entry into the TV market. Skeptics say Apple won’t enter the TV market because it has a very low replacement cycle (most families won’t replace their TV for between 5 to 10 years) and low margins.

Apple is working on new technology to deliver video to televisions, and has been discussing whether to try to launch a subscription TV service, according to people familiar with the matter,” said an August 26 article in The Wall Street Journal.

Over 1,200 British kids expelled in five years

According to a media report, over 1,200 pupils aged under seven have been expelled from British schools in the last five years for persistent misbehavior and violence.

The Sun reported citing a statement from the Department for Education said another 53,000 students were suspended and eventually allowed to go back to classes.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

In 2005-06, around 260 pupils aged seven and under were expelled, in 2006-07 it was 250, in 2007-08 it was 270, in 2008-09 and 2009-10, 220 were sent off each year.

Tory MP Dan Poulter said the then Labour government had lost control of the situation.

Education Secretary Michael Gove has now announced that teachers will be allowed to physically restrain violent pupils.

School staff will also be allowed to seize porn, mobile phones and video cameras.

Reports said schools which fail to control unruly pupils could face closure.

Tests In Pipeline To See If Stem Cells Can Halt MSA global trial led by British scientists will be making efforts to find out whether stem cells can safely be used for treating multiple sclerosis.

The global trial will investigate if the cells can slow, stop, and even reverse damage to the brain and spinal cord caused by multiple sclerosis.

From Dailymail.co.uk:

Scientists believe the new study will reduce the time taken to test whether stem cells could be a safe and effective treatment for people with MS by years, the MS Society said.

Simon Gillespie of the MS Society, which is contributing funding for the trial, said: ‘Stem cells hold tremendous potential as a future treatment option for people with MS.

‘We are delighted to be funding this world-leading piece of research which shows the power of an international research collaboration and joint working between charities.’

Results of the global trial will advance medical knowledge ‘by years’, scientists said.
