Few Girls Overestimate HPV Vaccine Protection

According to researchers from the United States, some adolescent girls who get the HPV vaccine for preventing cervical cancer wrongly think they no longer need to practice safe sex.

Few Girls Overestimate HPV Vaccine Protection

The study, which was published in the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine, demonstrated the need for better education about the vaccines and their limitations.

Merck’s Gardasil and GlaxoSmithKline’s Cervarix vaccines protect against strains of the humanpapilloma virus or HPV but do not prevent other forms of sexually transmitted diseases such as syphilis, gonorrhea, or human immunodeficiency virus or HIV that causes AIDS.

“Clinicians discussing HPV vaccination with girls and their mothers may need to emphasize the limitations of the vaccine and to specifically address that the vaccine does not prevent other sexually transmitted infections,” the team wrote.

Mom Of Kids Killed In Crash Drawing SupportAn Arizona mother who lost her three children and her ex-husband in a plane crash in the Superstition Mountains has been lent with support of friends and acquaintances.

Karen Perry, of Apache Junction, Ariz., has experienced a series of struggles in recent years and her two children were suffering from health complications (epilepsy and autism).

From news.yahoo.com:

“They were just great kids,” Mark Blomgren, principal at the school in Apache Junction where the two oldest children attended, told the Arizona Republic. “All the teachers were naturally shocked. They cared about them and wondered how their mom was doing and they were just hit pretty hard. Logan and Morgan were just special kids that the teachers really bonded with.”

Crews continued working Friday in the crags and outcroppings of the mountaintop area just east of Phoenix to finish recovering the remains of the six people aboard, Pinal County sheriff’s spokesman Elias Johnson told The Associated Press. The dead included Perry’s ex-husband, Shawn Perry, 39, who was the pilot.

“No one could have survived that crash,” Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has expanded the age range for the diagnosis and treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to children as young as 4 and as old as 18, in new guidelines released on Sunday.

New ADHD guidelines include preschoolers and older teens

The academy is emphasizing the use of behavior treatments over medication in most cases, for the youngest children.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

“I think the most significant changes are expanding the ages from preschool through adolescence. The original guidelines were from 6 to 12, because that’s where the evidence was. We’ve been able to broaden the scope of the guidelines because there was more evidence available for preschoolers and adolescents,” said the lead author of the new recommendations, Dr. Mark Wolraich, CMRI Shaun Walters Professor of Pediatrics and the Edith Kinney Gaylord Presidential Professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City.

Wolraich added that the new guidelines also give pediatricians advice on managing inattention or hyperactivity problems that don’t quite meet the definition of ADHD.

The new guidelines will be presented at the academy’s annual meeting in Boston and will be published in the November issue of Pediatrics.

Dr. Richard Gallagher, director of special projects at the Institute for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders at the NYU Child Study Center in New York City, said, “Medications should be used very carefully. I’m admittedly biased since I primarily do behavioral work, but behavioral work does have its limits. If a child is getting into dangerous situations or presenting with problems interacting appropriately with peers and adults, medications can be very useful. When monitored carefully, medications are safe for the vast majority of kids.”

Adults With Autism Hired To Test Software

The software testers at Aspiritech constitute the unusual workforce of a U.S. startup that specializes in finding software bugs by harnessing the talents of young adults with autism.

Aspiritech, a nonprofit in Highland Park, Ill., nurtures these skills while forgiving the quirks that could make adults with autism unemployable.

From news.yahoo.com:

“They exceeded my expectations,” said Dan Tedesco of Shelton, Conn.-based HandHold Adaptive, which took a chance on Aspiritech to test an iPhone application. “There is a pride in their product you don’t usually see in this type of work.”

Aspiritech was founded by Moshe and Brenda Weitzberg after their son, Oran, now 32, was fired from a job bagging groceries. Oran was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome when he was 14. He now works at Aspiritech.

“He went from failing at bagging groceries to being one of the best software testers on our team,” said Brenda Weitzberg.

“There have been a couple of attempts in the U.S. and Aspiritech is the one that’s making it,” said Scott Standifer of the University of Missouri’s Disability Policy and Studies office and the organizer of a national conference on adults with autism and employment.
