Tai chi 'can help prevent falls'

According to a study, elderly people whose eyesight is failing can improve their balance and avoid dangerous falls by practicing tai chi.

The gentle form of martial art builds strength besides improving balance control to reduce the chances of life-threatening falls among old people with poor eyesight.

Study author Dr William Tsang said: ‘Tai chi can be a suitable form of exercise for those with visual impairment and indeed assists with improving their balance control.’

The results were published in the Age and Ageing journal.

Children must learn times tables by age nineUnder plans to toughen up the National Curriculum, children will have to learn their times tables by the age of nine.

A ‘gold standard’ lesson plan modeled on the most rigorous exam systems in the world is what desired by Education Secretary Michael Gove. Gove would signal the change when an independent review publishes evidence that standards in England lag far behind other countries.

Pupils in Singapore are expected to master times tables and division by the age of nine, compared with 11 in England, according to the report by Tim Oates of Cambridge Assessment, a research group and exam board attached to Cambridge University.

Indian Fashion and the West

The world of Indian fashion has been continually improving to perfection with the expansion of western colonialism and development of foreign trades. The best part is that the forte of India’s fashion industry lies in its free-wheeling nature, which has the ability to incorporate anything, from the most exotic to the most fashionable, into integral India.

It is worthwhile to note that there are many reasons behind the western impact on the apparel and costume industries of India. The open-minded culture of the country along with its cultural diversities has the unmatched potential of embracing the entire world in a never-before way.

One of the other reasons behind the growing blend and evolution of Indian fashion is the capabilities of the fashion designers from India to interweave diverse fashions while lending an amazing personal touch, highlighting the true values of India, to them. In addition to all these factors, the success and awards coming in the way of Indian beauties at world beauty pageants and the evolution of Bollywood, the Indian film industry, at the world stage are also two of the biggest reasons behind the success of Indian fashion and its collaboration with the western culture. The costumes donned by the fashionable divas and Indian actresses, highlighting a blend of Indian and western wear, are inspirations for the commoners who try to be like their role models and make these costumes the latest fad in the country.

Last but not the least, the contributions of members of the fashion fraternity in India emphasizing upon both the Indian and western sensibilities have really offered endless reasons for the fashion enthusiasts in Indian to rejoice.
