Over 1,200 British kids expelled in five years

According to a media report, over 1,200 pupils aged under seven have been expelled from British schools in the last five years for persistent misbehavior and violence.

The Sun reported citing a statement from the Department for Education said another 53,000 students were suspended and eventually allowed to go back to classes.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

In 2005-06, around 260 pupils aged seven and under were expelled, in 2006-07 it was 250, in 2007-08 it was 270, in 2008-09 and 2009-10, 220 were sent off each year.

Tory MP Dan Poulter said the then Labour government had lost control of the situation.

Education Secretary Michael Gove has now announced that teachers will be allowed to physically restrain violent pupils.

School staff will also be allowed to seize porn, mobile phones and video cameras.

Reports said schools which fail to control unruly pupils could face closure.

Art and Fashion with Dasha Zhukova

One of the most intriguing magazines to come along in years, Garage, recently made its debut.

Looking at the magazine, one cannot actually find out if it is a fashion magazine that takes an interest in art, or an art magazine that also has something special for fashion enthusiasts.

From NYTimes.com:

One of the more provocative covers (there are three versions) shows a Hedi Slimane photograph of a lower half of a nude model, whose crotch is covered by a green butterfly sticker created by Damien Hirst. The sticker peels off (inspired by the Velvet Underground album art by Andy Warhol) to reveal a butterfly tattoo, also of Mr. Hirst’s design.

“It is so very, very different from other magazines,” said Garage’s art director, Mike Meiré, who is also the art director of the influential German magazine 032c. The masthead also includes Shala Monroque as creative director and Joan Juliet Buck as an editorial consultant, and style-world contributors like Giovanna Battaglia.

“It’s like a box of Pandora,” Mr. Meiré said. “You don’t know what is happening on the next page.”

The magazine is created by Dasha Zhukova, a former editor of Pop, and named after the contemporary art center she opened in Moscow in 2008.

Australian Schools Spying Online

Australian Schools Spying Online

Internet monitoring companies have been hired by Australian schools to spy on students’ activities on social networking sites.

“We go where the conversations are, where young people or communities of interest are coalescing online,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted an internet monitoring firm, SR7 partner, James Griffin, as saying.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

Northern Beaches Christian School Principal Stephen Harris said he calls parents even late at night if their children post inappropriate content on the web.

“Our school policy now extends the concept of the school playground to any environment in the social media platform where a student of the school or a teacher is identified by either name, image or inference,” he said.

Public schools are also stepping into what had earlier been considered either private or the domain of parents.

New South Wales Council for Civil Liberties President Cameron Murphy described the monitoring as an “outrageous invasion” of students’ privacy.

“We know it’s become pretty much the essential way of communicating for this generation of students and we understand it’s a big part of their lives. But we’re also aware of the dangers that can come from unrestrained use,” School Director Frances Booth said.

Facebook To Be Killed On November 5

Hacker group ‘Anonymous’ has vowed to kill the social networking site, Facebook, citing privacy concern and security violation of user information.

The day (November 5th, 2011) is celebrated as Guy Fawkes Day in Britain as a commemoration of the Gunpowder Plot in which Fawkes placed explosives in the House of Lords in 1605.

From in.news.yahoo.com:

The speaker in the video, invites people to join the cause and kill Facebook for the sake of protecting their own privacy.

“If you are a willing hacktivist or a guy who just wants to protect the freedom of information then join the cause and kill Facebook for the sake of your own privacy,” the speaker added.

Mentioning privacy concerns and Facebook’s ability to store and sell personal information about its users, the group said, “Everything you do on Facebook stays on Facebook regardless of your ‘privacy’ settings, and deleting your account is impossible.”

Facebook has been selling information to government agencies and giving clandestine access to information security firms so that they can spy on people from around the world,” ‘Anonymous’ said.
