The John D. Calandra Italian American Institute of CUNY decided to host a colloquium entitled “Guido: An Italian-American Youth Style” in the wake of the anti-defamation campaign against MTV’s reality show Jersey Shore. This YouTube video is all about the colloquium that became a rage in the past.

The widespread use of search engines and online databases is affecting the way people remember information, according to a research.

To know whether people were more likely to remember information that could be easily retrieved from a computer, Betsy Sparrow, an assistant professor of psychology at Columbia and her collaborators, Daniel M. Wegner of Harvard and Jenny Liu of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, staged different memory experiments, reports the New York Times.

In one experiment where participants typed 40 bits of trivia, the team found that the subjects were significantly more likely to remember information if they thought they would not be able to find it later.

“Participants did not make the effort to remember when they thought they could later look up the trivia statement they had read,” wrote the authors.

A second experiment was aimed at determining whether computer accessibility affects precisely what we remember.

“If asked the question whether there are any countries with only one colour in their flag, for example,” the researchers wrote, “do we think about flags – or immediately think to go online to find out?”

In this case, participants were asked to remember both the trivia statement itself and which of five computer folders it was saved in. The researchers were surprised to find that people seemed better able to recall the folder.

“Human memory,” she said, “is adapting to new communications technology.”

In an analysis that set off a fierce debate over the health effects of salt, British scientists said they had found no evidence that small cuts to salt intake minimize the risk of developing heart disease or dying prematurely.

The scientists said while cutting salt consumption did appear to lead to slight reductions in blood pressure but the same was not translated into lower incidents of death or reduced risk of heart diseases.

With governments setting ever lower targets for salt intake and food manufacturers working to remove it from their products, it’s really important that we do some large research trials to get a full understanding of the benefits and risks of reducing salt intake,” said Rod Taylor of Exeter University, who led the review.

The Cochrane review attracted sharp criticism from nutrition experts. Francesco Cappuccio, head of the World Health Organization’s collaborating center for nutrition at Warwick University, said it was “a surprisingly poor piece of work.”

“This study does not change the priorities outlined worldwide for a population reduction in salt intake to prevent heart attacks and strokes, the greatest killers in the world,” he said in an emailed comment.

The systematic review has been published by The Cochrane Library.
